Few centuries changed the basic materials of art so thoroughly. Between 1900 and 2000 artists added collage, the readymade, photography, film, video, light, performance and the land itself to paint and bronze. Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) broke up the single viewpoint; Kazimir Malevich's Black Square (1915) proposed a painting with no subject at all; Marcel Duchamp's Fountain (1917) made choosing an object an artistic act.
Two world wars, revolutions and the exile of artists spread these ideas. After 1945 New York became a centre alongside Paris, first with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, then with Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art followed in the 1960s, while artists in Tokyo, São Paulo, Lagos and Delhi built modern traditions of their own. By the century's end painting, installation and new media existed side by side, with no single direction in charge.
