Digital culture as a subject covers art about the internet and life lived through screens: search engines, social media, online identity, the companies behind the platforms and the hidden labour that keeps them running. The first wave, net art, worked inside the browser in the mid-1990s; Olia Lialina's My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (1996) tells a broken love story through clickable frames.
Later artists examined the glitches and economics of the web. Cory Arcangel hacked a Nintendo cartridge so that only the drifting clouds remain in Super Mario Clouds (2002), and Clement Valla collects warped bridges and melted roads from satellite mapping in Postcards from Google Earth (from 2010). Andrew Norman Wilson filmed the separately badged book-scanning staff leaving a Google campus in Workers Leaving the Googleplex (2011). Amalia Ulman's staged Instagram persona in Excellences & Perfections (2014) showed how easily an online life can be scripted.
