About
Immersive works surround the viewer instead of hanging in front of them, so that the body is inside the piece. The ambition is old. Roman patrons had whole rooms painted as gardens, 18th-century panoramas wrapped audiences in circular views of battles and cities, and Claude Monet designed his late Water Lilies (installed 1927) to encircle visitors in oval rooms.
The 20th century made environment an art form. El Lissitzky's Proun Room (1923) spread abstraction across walls, and Allan Kaprow filled a courtyard with tyres in Yard (1961). Yayoi Kusama multiplied space with mirrors in Infinity Mirror Room—Phalli's Field (1965), and Edward Kienholz, later with Nancy Reddin Kienholz, built walk-in tableaux such as The Beanery (1965). Sound can immerse as fully as sight: Janet Cardiff's The Forty Part Motet (2001) places listeners among forty speakers, each carrying one voice. Photographs are a poor substitute.
