About
Pablo Picasso worked in so many manners that the word usually points to a few recognisable signatures. The first is Cubism, developed with Georges Braque from 1907–08, which breaks objects into interlocking planes. Another is the double view of a face, profile and frontal eye combined, as in Portrait of Dora Maar (1937). There are also the massive nudes of his classical phase in the early 1920s and the jagged, anguished line of Guernica (1937).
His influence spread from the 1910s. In Paris, Juan Gris and Louis Marcoussis took Cubist structure in their own directions. In New York, Arshile Gorky spent years painting through Picasso before finding his own voice. The Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, who befriended him in 1938, fused his lessons with Afro-Caribbean imagery, and in Britain Jankel Adler's work carried the influence to a younger circle. Look for split faces, heavy black contours and flat, bright colour.
