About
Musicians and instruments were favourite subjects for painters long before modern artists claimed music as a model. Caravaggio's The Lute Player (c. 1596) includes a legible part-book, and Johannes Vermeer's The Music Lesson (c. 1662–65) turns a virginal and a mirror into a study of attention. In the 19th century James McNeill Whistler gave paintings titles such as Nocturne and Symphony, arguing that colour could work like sound.
Modern artists chased rhythm. Henri Matisse's Music (1910) sets five red figures against blue and green, and Piet Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942–43) breaks his grid into flickering blocks, echoing the jazz he loved in New York. Andy Warhol designed the peelable banana cover for The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), and William Claxton's photographs of West Coast players defined the look of 1950s jazz. Ragnar Kjartansson's video The Visitors (2012) films friends playing one song in separate rooms of a house.
