About
Virtual reality immerses a viewer in a computer-generated space, usually through a headset that tracks head movement; augmented reality lays digital objects over the physical world through a phone, tablet or glasses. The groundwork came from computer science, including Ivan Sutherland's head-mounted display of 1968. Artists built immersive environments in the 1990s, as in Char Davies's Osmose (1995), where visitors moved by breathing and shifting their balance.
Affordable headsets from 2016 brought a new wave. Jordan Wolfson's Real Violence (2017) confronted wearers with a brutal beating; Rachel Rossin moves between painting and virtual space; Jakob Kudsk Steensen reconstructs lost and endangered ecosystems as explorable worlds. Augmented reality lets artists place virtual sculptures in streets and parks, visible only on a screen. Look for how a work handles presence, movement and scale, since the viewer's own position becomes part of the composition.
