About
Long before Spanish conquest, Andean peoples made some of the world's most accomplished textiles and ceramics. Paracas weavers embroidered mantles with flying figures, Moche potters modelled portrait vessels of individual faces, and the Inca fitted stone walls without mortar at Cusco and Machu Picchu. After the 1530s, painters of the Cusco School and sculptors in Quito turned European religious models into a local idiom, with gold brocade laid over painted robes and polychrome saints of great tenderness.
In the 20th century, indigenista painters such as José Sabogal in Peru and Oswaldo Guayasamín in Ecuador took Andean life as a modern subject. Venezuela became a centre of kinetic and geometric art through Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Alejandro Otero, while the German-born Gego built suspended wire networks in Caracas. Colombia produced Fernando Botero's inflated figures and, later, Doris Salcedo's sculptures about loss and political violence.
