About
Berlin grew into an art capital as the seat of Prussia and then of imperial Germany. Karl Friedrich Schinkel gave it Neoclassical buildings in the early 19th century, and Adolph Menzel painted its rolling mills and court life with close observation. Max Liebermann led the Berlin Secession from 1898.
The early 20th century made the city a crucible. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted its streetwalkers and boulevards after moving there in 1911, and during the Weimar years Berlin Dada artists Hannah Höch, Raoul Hausmann and John Heartfield cut up magazines into sharp political photomontages, while George Grosz caricatured profiteers. After the Wall went up in 1961, West Berlin's low rents drew painters and Fluxus artists alike, and Wim Wenders filmed the divided city in Wings of Desire (1987). Since reunification, studios such as Olafur Eliasson's have made Berlin a base for international artists.
