About
India's art runs from the carved seals of the Indus Valley to today. The emperor Ashoka raised polished stone pillars in the 3rd century BC, and Buddhist monuments such as the painted caves of Ajanta show a sensuous, narrative art. Hindu temple builders covered towers with sculpture, and Chola bronze casters in the south made the dancing Shiva, Nataraja, a defining image. At the Mughal court, painters working for Akbar and Jahangir made minutely observed miniatures.
Under British rule, Raja Ravi Varma blended oil painting with Indian myth, and the Bengal School looked back to Asian traditions. Amrita Sher-Gil painted Indian women with modern gravity in the 1930s. The Progressive Artists' Group, formed in Bombay in 1947 by F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, M. F. Husain, set out a modernism for the new nation. Contemporary artists include Nalini Malani, Subodh Gupta and Mrinalini Mukherjee.
