About
Viking-age craftsmen covered ships, sledges and jewellery with writhing animal ornament, as on the 9th-century Oseberg ship, and the carved portal of Urnes stave church carries the style into Christian Norway. In the early 19th century, the Danish Golden Age painter C. W. Eckersberg set standards of clear, careful observation.
Late in the century, Nordic painters became known for luminous summer light and quiet interiors: P. S. Krøyer at Skagen, Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson in Sweden, and Vilhelm Hammershøi with his grey Copenhagen rooms. Edvard Munch turned anxiety into image in The Scream (1893), and Hilma af Klint began painting abstractions in 1906. In the 20th century, Scandinavian design made plain wood and gentle curves international: Alvar Aalto's bent plywood from Finland, Arne Jacobsen's Egg chair (1958), Finn Juhl's sculpted teak and Axel Salto's budding stoneware. Olafur Eliasson now works with light, weather and perception.
