About
In Patagonia, the Cueva de las Manos holds stencilled hands made thousands of years ago. Mapuche silversmiths in Chile and Argentina crafted large pectorals and pins, and in the 17th and 18th centuries Guaraní carvers at the Jesuit missions of Paraguay made Baroque saints and altarpieces.
The region's modern art is notably inventive. Joaquín Torres-García returned to Montevideo in 1934 and taught a Constructivism organised around grids and symbols. In Buenos Aires in the 1940s, Concrete and Madí artists made paintings with cut-out, irregular edges, and the Rosario-born Lucio Fontana issued his White Manifesto (1946) before his slashed canvases in Italy. The Chilean Roberto Matta painted swirling Surrealist spaces, and Sergio Larrain photographed Valparaíso with a poet's eye. In 1968, artists in Argentina joined the Tucumán Arde project to expose poverty in a sugar-producing province, and Marco Maggi now makes minute drawings and cuttings.
