About
Taiwan's Indigenous peoples have long practised their own arts, such as the carved ancestral posts and glass beads of the Paiwan and the painted plank boats of the Tao on Orchid Island. Under Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945, young artists learned oil painting and watercolour. Chen Cheng-po painted sunlit streets of his hometown, Chiayi, before he was killed in 1947, and Lan Yin-ding recorded rural life in watercolour.
After 1949, painters from the mainland brought ink traditions, and in the late 1950s the Fifth Moon and Eastern groups pushed toward abstraction. The lifting of martial law in 1987 opened space for political art, such as Wu Tien-chang's portraits of dictators and Chen Chieh-jen's films about history and labour. The Taiwanese-born Tehching Hsieh spent whole years on single performances in New York, and Michael Lin paints walls and floors with enlarged floral fabric patterns.
