About
The cities of the Indus civilisation, including Mohenjo-daro, left carved seals, a small bronze dancing girl and a bearded stone figure known as the Priest-King. Around the start of the first millennium AD, Gandhara sculptors near Peshawar and Taxila carved the Buddha in schist with draped robes that show Greek and Roman influence. Mughal emperors made Lahore a showpiece, with the Badshahi Mosque completed in 1673.
After independence in 1947, Abdur Rahman Chughtai refined a lyrical watercolour style based on Mughal and Persian art, and Sadequain painted monumental calligraphic murals. At the National College of Arts in Lahore, a revival of miniature painting from the 1980s led to a contemporary movement. Shahzia Sikander, Imran Qureshi, Saira Wasim and Waseem Ahmed rework the miniature's fine brushwork into sharp commentary. Others include Bani Abidi with video and Anila Quayyum Agha with patterned shadows cast from lit, cut screens.
