About
In the 1930s Diego Rivera painted murals in San Francisco, and Depression-era artists covered the inside of Coit Tower with scenes of California labour. After the war the California School of Fine Arts became a hotbed: Clyfford Still taught abstraction there, and David Park and Richard Diebenkorn led a return to the painted figure.
The Beat years produced intense, handmade art. Jay DeFeo spent years building up The Rose (1958–66) until it weighed nearly a ton, and Bruce Conner made assemblages from nylon and debris. Around the Bay, Funk artists turned clay and kitsch into irreverent sculpture, among them Roy De Forest and Viola Frey. Barbara Stauffacher Solomon painted bold Supergraphics at Sea Ranch in the 1960s, and Judith Scott wrapped found objects in yarn at Oakland's Creative Growth studio. In the 1990s, Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen drew on street lettering in what became known as the Mission School.
