About
CalArts was formed in 1961 from the merger of the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, with Walt Disney as its driving backer; the Valencia campus opened in 1971. From the start it mixed art, film, animation, music, dance and performance, and its art programme became a laboratory for conceptual teaching.
In the early 1970s Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro ran the Feminist Art Program, whose students transformed a Hollywood house into the installation Womanhouse (1972). John Baldessari's Post-Studio Art class and Michael Asher's famously long group critiques shaped how a generation thought about images and institutions. Students of that decade, among them Jack Goldstein, Troy Brauntuch, James Welling and David Salle, became central to the Pictures Generation's use of borrowed imagery, while Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw explored a darker, pop-cultural vein. Later graduates include Mark Bradford.
