Conflict takes in every kind of struggle: battles, uprisings, protests, brawls and quarrels. Battle painting long served rulers, and Paolo Uccello's three panels of The Battle of San Romano (c. 1435–60) still read as pageantry, with lances and horses arranged as if for a tournament.
Francisco de Goya ended that illusion. His etchings The Disasters of War, made between 1810 and 1820 but published only in 1863, show executions and mutilations with no hero in sight, and Honoré Daumier's lithograph Rue Transnonain (1834) records a family killed by soldiers after a Paris uprising. Otto Dix's print cycle Der Krieg (1924) drew on his years in the trenches, and Pablo Picasso's Guernica (1937) answered the bombing of a Basque town. Later artists targeted the imagery of war itself: Leon Golub painted mercenaries and interrogators in the 1970s and 1980s, and the duo kennardphillipps collaged politicians into photographs of the Iraq war.
