About
Minimalism took shape in New York in the 1960s, when Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin and others made objects without illusion or expressive touch: factory-made boxes, floor grids of metal plates, fluorescent tubes. The work made viewers aware of their own position in the room. In the late 1960s artists such as Eva Hesse and Richard Serra loosened its geometry with latex, rope, molten lead and gravity.
Minimal art now draws on both phases. Some artists keep strict geometry and a narrow palette: Julia Mangold makes dark, wax-finished forms in steel and wood, and Ann Edholm paints taut compositions of a few flat shapes. Others choose modest, used materials over industrial ones. Gedi Sibony arranges salvaged carpet, cardboard and doors with slight interventions, and Rolf Julius placed small loudspeakers playing quiet sounds among stones, bowls and pigment. Look for reduction, careful placement and attention to surface, edge and silence.
