About
Dau al Set, Catalan for 'the seventh face of the die', formed in Barcelona in 1948 around a small magazine that bore its name. Its founders were the poet Joan Brossa, the painters Antoni Tàpies, Joan Ponç and Modest Cuixart, the artist and printer Joan-Josep Tharrats and the philosopher Arnau Puig. Under Franco, whose regime suppressed Catalan culture and favoured official taste, the magazine offered an outlet for experiment and a quiet form of dissent.
The group looked back to Paul Klee, Max Ernst and above all Joan Miró, and to the magic, alchemy and occult symbols beloved of Surrealism. Early paintings are dark and dreamlike, crowded with strange creatures and signs; Ponç's drawings are especially hallucinatory. Brossa's visual poetry grew from these years. By the early 1950s members were going separate ways, and Tàpies soon turned to the thick, scratched matter paintings that made his name.
