About
Fluxus gathered around the Lithuanian-born designer George Maciunas, who took the name from the Latin for 'flowing' and organised a festival of new music in Wiesbaden, West Germany, in 1962. Several of its members had attended John Cage's experimental composition classes in New York in the late 1950s and shared his interest in chance and everyday sound.
A typical Fluxus work is small, cheap and often funny. George Brecht wrote 'event scores', brief printed instructions that anyone could perform, such as turning a lamp on and off. Yoko Ono's Cut Piece (1964) invited the audience to snip away her clothing with scissors. Nam June Paik attacked pianos before pioneering video art, Ben Vautier signed everyday things as his own works, and Maciunas packed cards, objects and scores into boxed Fluxkits. Joseph Beuys took part in early German Fluxus concerts. Actions mattered more than objects.
