About
Group Material was founded in 1979 by a dozen or so young artists, among them Tim Rollins, Julie Ault and Mundy McLaughlin, who opened a storefront space on East 13th Street in Manhattan in 1980. Their medium was the exhibition. Rather than presenting one artist's career, they mixed works by professionals and amateurs with everyday objects around a theme, as in The People's Choice (Arroz con Mango) (1981), made up of things lent by neighbours.
After giving up the storefront, the group, joined by Doug Ashford in 1982 and Felix Gonzalez-Torres in 1987, worked in public: placards in subway cars, banners, and inserts in newspapers. Democracy (1988) combined exhibitions with town-meeting discussions on education, electoral politics and cultural participation. AIDS Timeline (1989) set artworks, documents and ephemera year by year against official responses to the epidemic. Their approach anticipated curating as an artistic practice.
