About
Landscape was one of photography's first subjects, partly because it held still for long exposures. In the 1850s Roger Fenton photographed valleys, abbeys and moorland across Britain, and in France Henri Le Secq recorded cathedrals for a government survey of monuments. In the American West after the Civil War, Timothy O'Sullivan travelled with geological surveys, and Carleton Watkins hauled mammoth glass plates into Yosemite.
In the 20th century Ansel Adams made crisp, finely graded black-and-white pictures of mountains and parks, such as Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941). The 1975 exhibition New Topographics turned attention to tract houses, parking lots and industrial sheds, with Joe Deal and Robert Adams among its photographers. Richard Misrach's Desert Cantos record fires, floods and military sites in the American desert, and Jem Southam returns for years to the same rivers and coastlines in south-west England.
