About
In the 1980s, while Neo-Expressionist painting drew most attention, other artists returned to the strategies of 1960s Conceptual art: text, photography, found objects and scrutiny of the systems that give art its meaning. They engaged more directly with mass media, commerce and questions of representation.
Louise Lawler photographs artworks where they actually end up, in homes, storerooms and offices, showing how settings shape how art is seen. Allan McCollum made hundreds of cast Plaster Surrogates, blank stand-ins for framed pictures. Felix Gonzalez-Torres used paper stacks, strings of light bulbs and billboards of an empty bed to address love, loss and AIDS with minimal means. Michael Craig-Martin's An Oak Tree (1973), a glass of water on a shelf declared to be a tree, anticipated the approach. In the 1990s Gabriel Orozco reworked everyday things with simple interventions, such as a Citroën DS narrowed by removing its middle.
