About
The Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig kept figure drawing and oil technique central to its teaching throughout the German Democratic Republic, when Werner Tübke, Wolfgang Mattheuer and Bernhard Heisig made the city the home of an ambitious, often allegorical realism. In the early 2000s critics began using the name New Leipzig School for painters who studied there around and after 1989, above all Neo Rauch, a pupil of Heisig and Arno Rink.
Rauch's large canvases put figures in outmoded work clothes or historical costume among factories, sheds and comic-strip fragments, at clashing scales and in chalky, faded colour. Others went their own ways: Matthias Weischer paints crowded, stage-like interiors, Tim Eitel sets solitary figures against flat, quiet fields, and David Schnell builds vertiginous perspectives from timber structures. Several work in the Spinnerei, a converted cotton mill, and many doubt that they form a school at all.
