About
Chinese artists born in the 1970s grew up after the Cultural Revolution, studied as economic reform became a consumer boom, and began showing work around 2000. Critics grouped them as a generation whose work turned inward. Where the '85 New Wave and Political Pop had wrestled with national history and ideology, these artists more often started from private feeling, fantasy, youth culture and daily life in fast-changing cities.
The range is wide. Painters including Chen Ke and Li Jikai made intimate, dreamlike images of childhood and solitude, close in spirit to the anime-influenced Cartoon Generation. Yang Fudong's five-part film Seven Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest (2003–07) follows young urbanites adrift between tradition and modern life, and Cao Fei built RMB City (2007–11), a satirical Chinese metropolis, inside the online world Second Life. Li Songsong, by contrast, rebuilds historical and news photographs from thick slabs of oil paint.
