About
Gothic began near Paris around 1140, when Abbot Suger rebuilt the choir of the abbey church of Saint-Denis with pointed arches, rib vaults and large windows. Over the following century cathedrals at Chartres, Reims and Amiens grew taller and brighter, their walls opened up with stained glass and braced by flying buttresses. The style spread across Europe.
It was also an age of sculpture, painting and precious objects. Portal figures grew more lifelike, and in Italy Giovanni Pisano gave pulpit reliefs new emotional force. In Siena Duccio painted gold-ground altarpieces, and Ambrogio Lorenzetti frescoed allegories of good and bad government (1338–39). Around 1400 the International Gothic style favoured elegant courtly detail, as in the Limbourg brothers' calendar pages for the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry. Veit Stoss in Kraków and Nuremberg and Tilman Riemenschneider in Würzburg carved intricate limewood altarpieces into the early 1500s.
