About
Feminist art took shape in the late 1960s and early 1970s, alongside the women's liberation movement in the United States and Europe. Artists protested their exclusion from exhibitions and art history, and asked why needlework, china painting and other crafts long associated with women ranked below painting and sculpture. In 1971 the art historian Linda Nochlin published her essay 'Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?'
In California, Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro led Womanhouse (1972), in which students turned a condemned Los Angeles house into installations about domestic life. Chicago's The Dinner Party (1974–79) set a triangular banquet table for 39 women from history. The body was central: Carolee Schneemann, Hannah Wilke and Ana Mendieta used their own bodies as material, and Mary Kelly's Post-Partum Document (1973–79) traced her son's early years. Nancy Spero printed and collaged images of women along long paper scrolls.
