About
A digital print is made by sending an image file to a printer rather than by inking a plate, block or screen. Most are inkjet prints, sprayed in microscopic droplets of dye or pigment; others expose photographic paper with lasers or cure ink onto aluminium or vinyl with ultraviolet light.
Fine-art use took off in the early 1990s, when Graham Nash's studio adapted the Iris proofing printer for artists and the term 'giclée', from a French verb meaning to spray, came into use. Since then the printer itself has become a subject. Wade Guyton feeds folded linen through large Epson printers, so streaks and slips become part of the image, and Thomas Ruff enlarged heavily compressed internet files in his jpegs series of the 2000s to reveal their blocky structure. Signs of the process include even colour with no plate mark and, under magnification, a fine scatter of droplets.
