About
Ceramics are made from clay fired until hard; glass from sand and other minerals melted and worked while hot. Earthenware is porous and fired low, stoneware is dense, and porcelain, perfected in China at kilns such as Jingdezhen, is white, hard and translucent. European makers chased its secret until Meissen produced hard-paste porcelain around 1710.
Glassblowing emerged in the eastern Mediterranean in the 1st century BC, and Murano later refined clear cristallo. Potters in Abbasid Iraq developed lustre glazes in the 9th century, and in Renaissance Florence the della Robbia family and Benedetto Buglioni made glazed terracotta sculpture. Around 1900 Émile Gallé and Louis Comfort Tiffany turned glass into an art of nature and colour, and in postwar Murano Carlo Scarpa and Fulvio Bianconi designed for Venini. Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party (1974–79) set hand-painted porcelain plates at the centre of a feminist installation.
