About
Since the late 1990s, a new designer's first audience has often been a graduation show in Eindhoven or London, or the young designers' section of the Milan furniture fair. Many of these designers produce their own work in small runs, which gives them freedom to experiment.
Material and process are often the subject. Max Lamb has cast pewter stools in sand moulds dug on a beach, Nacho Carbonell builds cocoon-like seats of mesh and sand, and Chris Schanck covers improvised armatures with foil and resin. Iris van Herpen has used 3D printing to produce couture, the Haas Brothers make furry, beaded and bronze creatures that double as furniture, and Wieki Somers turns household objects into small narratives. Johannesburg's Dokter and Misses and New York's Chen Chen and Kai Williams show how widely the field ranges. Emerging is a relative term, and several of these designers are now well established.
