About
Women have always made and designed objects, but modern design histories long filed them as assistants or partners. At the Bauhaus most women were steered into weaving, where Gunta Stölzl became the school's first female master; Marianne Brandt nonetheless excelled in metalwork with her small teapot (1924). Lilly Reich co-designed exhibition interiors with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Charlotte Perriand shaped the tubular steel furniture of Le Corbusier's studio from 1927.
After the war Florence Knoll's Planning Unit reinvented the modern office, Lina Bo Bardi lifted the galleries of the São Paulo Museum of Art (1968) on two great concrete frames. Gae Aulenti turned a Paris railway station into the Musée d'Orsay (1986), and in Milan Cini Boeri designed the endless Serpentone sofa (1971). Maria Pergay worked in stainless steel, Mira Nakashima carries on her father's studio, and Hella Jongerius and Wieki Somers lead in contemporary design.
