About
Some pictures show many things at once without the arranged tabletop of a classic still life. The objects may be lined up in rows, scattered across an empty field, sorted into a grid or pinned flat like specimens. Natural history supplied an early model: Albertus Seba's Thesaurus (1734–65) printed shells and snakes in decorative ranks, and in the 17th century Cornelius Gijsbrechts painted trompe-l'oeil letter racks crowded with papers and tools. Wayne Thiebaud's Cakes (1963) sets out desserts like a bakery counter, and in Zeng Hao's paintings furniture and appliances float, tiny and unrelated, in large blank rooms. Look for repetition, inventory and odd shifts of scale.
