News photographs became practical once halftone printing let them appear directly on the page in the 1880s, and small cameras such as the Leica, launched in 1925, let photographers move with events. German illustrated magazines of the late 1920s developed the photo-essay, and Life, founded in 1936, carried the form to millions of readers.
War shaped the profession. Robert Capa photographed the Spanish Civil War and the D-Day landings, and in 1947 co-founded the Magnum agency with Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour so that photographers could keep the rights to their work. Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Miller and later Don McCullin brought conflict to readers at home. Moneta Sleet Jr. became the first African American man to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism, for his 1968 photograph of Coretta Scott King at her husband's funeral. The genre rests on a promise that the scene was neither staged nor altered.
