Scattered Composition

A scattered composition distributes its parts loosely, as if dropped or thrown. There is no clear centre, and the eye jumps from element to element. Japanese painters of the 17th century sometimes strewed fans, poem cards or blossoms across gold screens, and designers of the Rinpa school are known for this lively, off-balance placement.

Chance turned scattering into a method in modern art. Jean Arp said he made collages around 1916–17 by letting torn paper squares fall onto a sheet, and Marcel Duchamp's 3 Standard Stoppages (1913–14) preserved the shapes of threads dropped from a height. In the late 1960s Post-Minimalists spread felt, threadwaste and metal offcuts loosely over floors. More recently Mandy Barker has photographed plastic debris gathered from beaches and oceans, laid out against black backgrounds like drifting specimens. Look for how density and spacing still steer the eye.
