Many artists and designers choose techniques with centuries behind them, not from nostalgia but for the knowledge they hold: how silk takes ink, how glass behaves at the furnace, how a glaze pools. Shōji Hamada, a leading figure in Japan's mingei folk-craft movement, made stoneware at Mashiko from the 1920s that joined Japanese, Korean and English traditions, and Murano firms such as Seguso keep Venetian glassmaking alive in modern forms.

In painting, Gu Gan has fused Chinese calligraphy with abstraction, and Pema Rinzin draws on his thangka training in contemporary compositions. Others move craft into new contexts. Alighiero Boetti commissioned Afghan embroiderers to make his Mappa world maps from the early 1970s, and Lin Tianmiao binds everyday objects in white thread. The strongest examples pair real command of the craft with a clear present-day purpose, so the technique reads as a choice rather than a pastiche.
