About
In craft and design, vessel names any hollow form, and the word often signals that a pot or bowl is being considered as sculpture. The idea has deep roots: Shang and Zhou dynasty China cast bronze ritual vessels for offerings to ancestors, their shapes fixed by ceremony. Around 1900 Gorham's Martelé silver was raised by hand with visible hammer marks and flowing Art Nouveau forms.
After 1945 the vessel became a leading form for studio artists. Fulvio Bianconi gave Venini glass bold patches of colour, Edward Moulthrop turned huge, lustrous wooden vessels, and Hiroshi Suzuki hammers silver into rippling, water-like surfaces. Betty Woodman and Axel Salto pushed ceramics towards painting and organic growth. Look at the relation between inside and outside, the thickness of the walls and the treatment of the rim.
