Wallpaper grew into a serious art in the 18th century, when hand-painted Chinese papers showing birds, flowering trees and scenes of daily life were imported to hang in European drawing rooms. French manufacturers answered with woodblock-printed panoramas: Joseph Dufour's Sauvages de la mer Pacifique (1804–05) wrapped an entire room in a continuous view, using many blocks and colours. In England William Morris issued his first design, Trellis, in 1864, and Christopher Dresser created flat, stylised patterns in the following decades.
The 20th century kept reinventing the medium. Dagobert Peche designed spiky, witty papers for the Wiener Werkstätte, and Andy Warhol papered an entire room with his Cow Wallpaper (1966). Studios like Flavor Paper now screen-print bold designs by hand, and digital printing lets artists and designers make one-off murals.
