About
Cities can be pictured from outside, as a skyline or panorama, or from inside, as the bustle of streets and cafés. Many works do both. Japanese folding screens of ‘scenes in and around the capital’ (rakuchū rakugai zu), painted from the 16th century onwards, float Kyoto's temples and palaces between golden clouds while filling its streets with festivals, merchants and processions.
European and American artists moved between the two scales. Camille Pissarro painted the Boulevard Montmartre in 1897 from a hotel window at different hours and seasons, turning traffic and pedestrians into flickering strokes. Umberto Boccioni's The City Rises (1910) makes a building site into a whirl of horses and labourers, and Piet Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942–43) compresses Manhattan's grid and traffic into pulsing blocks of colour. Photographers such as Andreas Feininger have covered the same range, from a single doorway to telephoto views of all Manhattan.
