About
Glass is made by melting sand with soda, lime or other fluxes. Hot, it can be blown, cast, fused or drawn into canes; cold, it can be cut and polished. For centuries the finest work came from specialist workshops, above all on Murano and in Bohemia.
Two developments shaped modern art glass. In the United States, workshops in Toledo in 1962 showed that an artist could melt and blow glass in a small studio furnace, launching the Studio Glass movement. In Czechoslovakia, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová cast massive sculptures in which colour deepens and thins with the thickness of the form. Yoichi Ohira, working with Murano craftsmen, built small vessels from fused mosaic canes, and Ritsue Mishima has colourless forms blown there. Josiah McElheny uses mirrors and blown glass to explore modernist design history. Look for clarity, colour depth and weight.
