About
Impressionism never stopped. After its French beginnings in the 1870s it became a shared language across Europe, the Americas and beyond: Joaquín Sorolla painted blazing Valencian beaches, Konstantin Korovin caught Paris boulevards at night in quick, bright notations, and Californian painters of the 1910s and 1920s built a regional school on outdoor light.
Painters working in the tradition today keep its practical core. Many work outdoors and finish a canvas in one or a few sessions to catch a particular hour and weather. Colour is mixed partly on the canvas in short, visible strokes, shadows are coloured rather than black, and edges soften where light dissolves them. Subjects stay close to the originals: gardens, beaches, harbours, city streets after rain, race meetings and social gatherings. Look for the time of day a painting records, the warmth or coolness of its light and how much is suggested rather than described.
