Folds show how a material behaves under force. Painters have long used them to show off their skill: the crisp, heavy drapery of Jan van Eyck's figures, or the curling letters and dog-eared papers in 17th-century Dutch trompe-l'oeil letter racks. Sculptors met the same challenge in stone, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1647–52) turns marble into a churning mass of creased cloth.
Twentieth-century artists often made the crease real instead of depicting it. John Chamberlain crushed car body parts into sculpture from the late 1950s, and Simon Hantaï folded and knotted canvas before painting it, then opened it out, in his pliage works of the 1960s. Photographers have caught skin and fabric wrinkling under raking light. Look for the difference between a fold that has been drawn and one that has actually been made, and for how light catches the ridges and pools in the hollows.
