About
A dense composition fills the field so the eye can wander without ever reaching a blank patch. Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Netherlandish Proverbs (1559) packs more than a hundred sayings into one village, and the Limbourg brothers' calendar pages for the Très Riches Heures (about 1412–16) crowd courtiers, labourers and castles into small painted rectangles. Persian manuscript painters and Mughal court artists layered architecture, gardens and processions in similarly packed scenes.
The impulse is often called horror vacui, a dislike of emptiness, and it recurs in very different settings: Insular gospel books, Victorian interiors, and the ornament-choked drawings of the self-taught Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli. Friedensreich Hundertwasser's spiralling paintings and Andreas Gursky's large photographs of trading floors and supermarket shelves show the effect in modern form. Look for how the artist still steers the eye through the crowd.
