About
Mirrors turn a work into a surface that changes with every viewer and every room. Architects used them for splendour: the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles (1678–84) lines one wall with 357 mirrors facing tall windows. In Iran, āina-kāri covers the ceilings and walls of shrines and palaces with thousands of cut mirror pieces, a craft Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian reworked into modern geometric sculpture from the 1970s.
In the 1960s mirrors became a way to question the art object. Michelangelo Pistoletto began his mirror paintings, figures fixed onto polished steel, in 1962, so viewers find themselves inside the picture. Lucas Samaras built a walk-in mirrored room in 1966, and Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Room installations, begun in 1965, multiply lights and dots into endless space. Look for how reflection breaks the boundary between work, setting and audience.
