About
The contrast between rough and refined tells the story of making inside a single object. Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners, carved for the tomb of Pope Julius II, show figures emerging from blocks still scored by the claw chisel, and Auguste Rodin later let polished marble heads rise deliberately out of roughly hewn stone, as in Thought (1886–89).
Designers have made the same contrast part of a material's character. The American woodworker George Nakashima kept the natural outline of wide timber slabs while smoothing and oiling their tops, and many later makers pair live edges with resin, glass or metal. Ceramists leave raw, sandy clay beside glossy glaze, and architects set rough board-marked concrete against polished stone. Look for the boundary where untouched material meets the worked surface, and for what each side reveals about the other.
