About
Digital painting and drawing use a stylus, mouse or finger on a screen instead of a brush on canvas, with software imitating or inventing marks. The tools came from research labs: Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad let users draw with a light pen in 1963, and Richard Shoup's SuperPaint at Xerox PARC (1973) offered a true painting program with a palette. In 1985 Andy Warhol painted a portrait of Debbie Harry live on an Amiga computer.
Affordable tablets and programs from the 1990s, and later the iPad, put digital brushes in almost every studio. Jeff Elrod draws quick 'frictionless' compositions on a computer and transfers them onto canvas; Osinachi builds portraits of Black figures in Microsoft Word; Joseph Nechvatal fed images to robotic painting machines. Look for flawless gradients, repeated stamp-like textures and edges cleaner than a hand usually makes.
