About
An animal portrait treats one creature as a sitter, with a name, a character and a likeness worth recording. Owners commissioned them for prized horses and hounds: George Stubbs painted the racehorse Whistlejacket (c. 1762) life-size against a bare ground, and Edwin Landseer gave two dogs almost human expressions in Dignity and Impudence (1839). At the Mughal court, Ustad Mansur recorded rare animals sent to the emperor Jahangir with a naturalist's care. Photography extended the habit: from the 1970s William Wegman posed his Weimaraners, beginning with Man Ray, in deadpan portraits and costumes.
