About
Digital art is made with computers, whether the result is a plotter drawing, an animation, a website or a print. It began in research labs. In 1965 Georg Nees and Frieder Nake in Germany and A. Michael Noll in the United States showed drawings produced by programs and pen plotters, and the London exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity (1968) brought computer art to a wide public. Vera Molnár pursued systematic geometry with code, and Harold Cohen spent decades developing AARON, a program that drew.
The internet opened a new arena in the 1990s. JODI turned broken code into chaotic browser art, and Olia Lialina's My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (1996) told a story through clickable frames. Later artists turned to data, rendering and games: Jason Salavon averages hundreds of photographs into single composites, and Ed Atkins makes computer-generated videos voiced by digital avatars.
