Small, portable tables multiplied in 18th-century houses as tea, coffee and letter-writing became daily rituals. Tripod tables with tilting tops, candle stands, round French guéridons and nests of tables that slid one beneath another all date from this period. The modern side table is often a simple frame of metal or a disc of wood, and many designers have treated it as a small study in proportion: Finn Juhl and Peder Moos in Denmark made them in fine hardwoods, while Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand used steel and glass. Look for a steady base and a height that suits the seat beside it.
