About
Upholstery turns a frame into a place to sink into. From the 17th century European upholsterers stretched webbing across seat frames and built up padding of horsehair, wool and feathers, finished with fabric held by tacks or decorative nails. Coil springs in the 19th century allowed deep, buttoned seats, and after the Second World War foam rubber let designers shape seating freely. Pierre Paulin pulled stretch jersey over foam-padded frames, Gaetano Pesce compressed foam chairs for shipping, and Danish designers such as Ole Wanscher and Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen paired tight upholstery with fine wooden frames. Original covers rarely survive, so look for signs of later reupholstering, such as staples in place of tacks.
