About
Without arms, a chair can tuck under a table or line a wall, and for centuries side chairs were made in sets, often a dozen or more matched to a pair of armchairs. In 18th-century Britain the pierced and carved back splat carried most of the decoration, as the pattern books of Thomas Chippendale show. The Shakers made ladder-backs with woven seats, and bentwood café chairs from Thonet filled the coffee houses of Europe. Modern stacking chairs, such as Arne Jacobsen's plywood Series 7 (1955), carried the side chair into offices and canteens. Look at the joint between seat rail and back leg, where chairs usually fail.
