In medieval halls, dinner was served on boards laid across trestles and cleared away afterwards. Permanent dining rooms spread through wealthy European houses in the 18th century, and Georgian cabinetmakers in Britain devised mahogany tables that pulled apart to take extra leaves, so one piece could seat six or twenty.
Modern designers rethought the base. Eero Saarinen's pedestal table of the mid-1950s cleared away the forest of legs beneath, and Finn Juhl and Charlotte Perriand made tables of warm wood and simple lines. George Nakashima and Sam Maloof let the grain of a single slab lead the design. Contemporary studios such as Nucleo cast tops in resin, and Ingrid Donat works in patinated bronze. Look at the height, the legroom for sitters at the ends, how the table extends and how well the surface withstands daily use.
